UCL Recon (Tommy John)
Tommy John. He was a four-time All-Star. His career spanned a massive 26 years and six teams. He played in three World Series. But when you hear his name, chances are, you think of surgery. And for good reason. He was the patient for the groundbreaking Tommy John surgery in 1974.
The official name, however, is ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction. You see, your upper arm (ulnar) is connected to your forearm by your collateral ligament. This ligament is one of the main stabilizers of the elbow. Baseball pitchers, javelin throwers, wrestlers and other overhead athletes are at risk of injuring this ligament.
If non operative treatment does not improve symptoms, ligament reconstruction or repair maybe needed. This procedure is typically done as an outpatient. Physical therapy is started immediately helping to restore function to the elbow. Players are typically able to resume light activity after about 4 months and return to sport approximately 12 months postop.
