Mucous Cyst Excision
Patients with arthritis can sometimes develop what we call mucous cysts. These cysts typically appear at the joint closest to your fingernail, or your distal interphalangeal joint (DIP).
If you develop a mucous cyst, it’s imperative that you absolutely not intentionally burst it at home on your own. Unlike benign ganglion cysts, a ruptured mucous cyst can actually ooze bacteria into your joint and cause a serious infection.
Instead, have your doctor evaluate it. He or she may suggest keeping an eye on it, but there’s a chance your doctor will recommend you have your cyst surgically removed.
The good news is that it’s an outpatient procedure with a straightforward healing process. Your surgeon will simply perform an excision, or removal, of your cyst. If all goes as usual, you should be able to resume normal activities within 2-3 weeks.
