ACL Reconstruction
Your anterior cruciate ligament is one of four ligaments that are vital to your knee’s stability. It connects your femur to your tibia, and when it becomes partially or completely torn, you may feel like your knee is about to give out.
ACL injuries tend to happen when you make sudden stops or changes in direction. For instance, athletes are particularly prone to this type of problem.
To address your ACL tear, your surgeon will likely need to reconstruct the ligament. There are many surgical techniques to address the torn ACL. Options include using your own tissue such as: patellar tendon or hamstring tendons, as well as, cadaver tissue. This procedure is typically done arthroscopically on an outpatient basis.
Recovery from ACL surgery can be lengthy, taking as long as six month to return to full strength.
